Our Romance with Welsh Ponies

We fell in love with Welshies in 2003 when given a beautiful grey mare by a friend of the family. Dunkid Anita was on the farm for almost a year when I came across an advert by Peter Dunkin, advertising a champion stallion called Dunkid Andante. As fate would have it, Peter bred Anita some years ago and I had her covered by Andante as a surprise for Wehlia who was overseas at the time. The result being the birth of a lovely colt we named Gwyddls Dante.
We then bought a mare called Wysiwyg Silverspoon, entered both mares in the Roseapple Spring Classic and had an eye opener as we did not know that Welsh Ponies have to literally be bursting out of their skins to come into contention for a placing.
Dunkid Anita we had covered by Koosbad Doktor and we were very happy when a lovely filly, whom we named Little Nikita arrived. Now our small stud was taking shape.
We were by now well and truly sold on Welshies and looked around to buy more of these lovely little ponies as these amazing little animals became, and still are the topic of conversation at every dinner, birthday party, or gathering with family and friends.
Digby Donaldson sold us Pajayhu Wandrie, a beautiful dapple grey mare that had already won Horse Of The Year Show in 2004 as well as a young colt, Llandilo Harvard, to keep our little colt Dante company and who was to do us proud later on . From Peter Dunkin, who has been a never ending source of information and inspiration, we bought two beautiful mares, Destiny Diva and Dunkid Summer Vogue with her young filly foal Dunkid Summer Sensation. We were also very lucky to buy a beautiful young 7 year old stallion named Caernafon Tabutanna Dunkid from Zimbabwe. The stud was by now well on the way.

Wandrie we entered in April 2006, National Championships, held in Bloemfontein and came away winning the Senior Mare title. Our young stallion Llandilo Harvard has placed at all shows entered and was judged Junior Champion and twice got the award of Reserve Junior Champion over the past two years. Wandrie has also won many titles including the Senior Mare Championship in Pretoria in 2006, was Supreme Champion at the North West Free State Championships held in Stilfontein in Nov 2007 and was also judged Supreme Purebred Welsh Champion at the 2008 Summer Show.

Caernafon Tabutanna Dunkid, lovingly known as Tanna, must take pride of place at our stud. Placed in all shows entered, he had the highlight of his career at the Pretoria International Show in August 2007, winning no less than 5 trophies. He was judged Senior Stallion Champion, Senior Welsh Champion, Regional Champion and Supreme Welsh Champion. He then went on to win the Supreme Interbreed Championship beating 21 other breed champions in this very prestigious event. The international Judge from Australia, Suellen Deane gave him a lovely write up in her championship report, and both Wehlia and I were very proud of our “lovely little man”  Tanna then went on to win the Summer Showing Festival as Champion Stallion section A.
Our stud is situated in Greenvalley, Kliprivier app. 30 kilometers South of Johannesburg. We are lucky to have river frontage and the ponies have daily grazing access to kikiyu, eragrostis and rye grass pastures. All ponies are stabled in the evenings. Our little stud now comprises 3 stallions, Tanna, Dante and Harvard,  alongside 7 broodmares, we also have 5 foals on the ground for future showing.  Breeding Welsh ponies has truly become our passion.
